I. love. this. movie. I love everything about it! This is probably the only movie that I could watch more than once a week, which I often do, and never get sick of it. Scream came around at a time when horror movies weren't as popular as they once were, and this movie sort of re-booted the horror genre. It is the greatest horror movie of the 90s. Ever since the release of Scream there have been a multitude of mediocre horror movies to follow in its footsteps, but none of them have even come close to being as original, entertaining, scary, or as well written as Scream.
The movie opens with everyone's favorite flower child, Drew Barrymore, being harassed by some creeper on the phone. He keeps asking questions like, "what's your favorite scary movie?" and "do you have a boyfriend?" Basically, this guy is just wicked creepy. So, she keepes hanging up on him, but he just keeps calling her right back and he gets progressively more angry. The phone tag goes on for a little while, but eventually it becomes known that he has been outside her house the entire time...CREEPY! And unfortunately for Ms. Barrymore her big scene in the film consists of her hanging from a tree after the killer is done with her. This all takes place within the first fifteen minutes of the film, so automatically you're hooked for the rest of the movie.
Then we're introduced to Sidney Prescott, a high school student whose mother was brutally murdered a year earlier. As if she didn't already have enough tradgedy in her life, she quickly becomes the "Ghostfaced" killer's next target. She starts receiving the same creepy phone calls as Drew Barrymore's character from the beginning of the movie. Pretty soon more and more people around her start dying and no one in town has any idea who the killer is. At first, the police and Sydney thought that maybe the killer was her pyscho-ish boyfriend, Billy, until he was released because his phone bill was clean. So if it's not the boyfriend, then who is it?
The audience finds out who it is in a twist ending that you couldn't see coming. So, if you've never seen Scream then I HIGHLY recommend that you check it out. It's excellent! There's not too much more I could say about this movie, except that I love it and it's the type of movie that you can enjoy over and over again. Oh, and thank you Wes Craven, the master of horror, for creating an instant classic for the horror genre.
On a side note, they are making a Scream 4. It's sort of odd since it was supposed to be a trilogy, meaning only three films, but apparently they just couldn't stop there. I have mixed feelings about this. I've read that all of the original cast members are going to be in it, Kevin Williamson, the writer, is on board, and I'm pretty sure Wes Craven will be directing it, but even though everyone is back on, that doesn't necessarily mean the story itself will be any good. Hopefully I'm wrong because the other three movies were good, so maybe this one will have potential. We'll have to just wait and see!
